This Sushobhan Thali depicts Krishna’s encounter with Kāliya, the serpent who had poisoned the waters of the Yamuna. As described in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Krishna entered the polluted river to restore its purity. Kāliya attacked him and wrapped his coils around him, alarming the people of Vraja who witnessed the scene. Krishna then freed himself and danced upon Kāliya’s many hoods. Overcome by Krishna’s power, Kāliya’s wives, the Nāgapatnīs, prayed to Krishna for mercy. Krishna spared Kāliya and instructed him to leave the Yamuna. The artwork portrays Krishna’s victorious dance on the serpent, symbolizing restored safety and the triumph of divine strength over a destructive force. It is presented as a piece of devotional décor.
